What Are The Best Dog Breeds For Apartments?

By

Owning a dog is something that many people dream of, but the reality of owning a pet can be difficult if you live in an apartment. Many apartments have strict rules about what kind of pets are allowed and how big they can be. Some buildings allow dogs at all while others don’t allow any pets at all.

Best Dog Breeds For Apartments - Boston Terrier

There are some breeds that work better in small spaces than others. We’ve put together this list to help apartment dwellers find the best dog breeds for apartments.

Boston Terrier

Known for their small size and friendly nature, Boston Terriers are another good breed for apartments. Typically, they stay active throughout the day in the house, so a short walk is all they will need. Additionally, they do not bark at every noise like other small dog breeds. The only time they bark is if something threatens them. This means you should not have to worry about neighbors complaining about noise.

Scottish Terriers

The Scottish Terrier, or Scottie, may be one of the most recognizable dog breeds. They can be a bit stubborn, so proper training is necessary while they are puppies so that behavioral problems are prevented as adults.

When they are puppies, Scotties can be playful, just like puppies, and when they are adults, Scotties are often well-behaved. It is important to properly socialize them when they are young in order to avoid problems with people and other animals. As long as they have a short daily walk, though, they will be comfortable living in an apartment without a yard.

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus make excellent apartment dogs due to their small size and minimal exercise requirements. The only disadvantage of owning one is that their fur requires extensive grooming. In spite of this, they are a popular choice among pet owners due to their friendly and affectionate personalities.

English Bulldogs

English Bulldogs are known for being couch potatoes. As opposed to dogs of other breeds that are quite active, English Bulldogs simply like to lay around. They are often incapable of walking any further than half a mile. Since they don’t require much space to run around, they are ideal for living in apartments.

Sussex Spaniel

A sweet and loyal dog species, Sussex Spaniels are generally able to live in small spaces. Since they tend to become overweight, you need to make sure they get ample exercise. They generally do not bother people in neighboring apartments due to their quiet nature and affection for strangers.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Among the gentlest and most affectionate of all dog breeds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels possess those “puppy dog” eyes. Considering their small size and weight, they’re perfect for apartments. These dogs also enjoy spending their time with their owners. Therefore, they don’t need a yard.

In choosing the best dog breeds for apartments, a number of factors must be taken into account. Size, exercise needs, barking behavior and compatibility with people are all factors to consider when determining whether your dog is well suited to apartment life.

The dog breeds on this list are just a few of the most suitable for apartments. If trained properly, other dogs may do well in a small space, however, you may have to spend more time walking them or taking them to dog parks or other places where they can run free for a while.
