By

It is fairly easy to teach your dog how to roll over. The act of training your dog is a great way to establish yourself as pack leader and bond with your pet. Let’s look at how to teach a dog to roll over.

Teach Your Dog How To Lie Down First

Before your dog can be taught to roll over, it must know how to lie down when commanded to do so. Teaching your dog to lay down is very simple.

To make your dog lie down, press gently on their backs and shoulders. Use your voice or a hand gesture to teach your dog what command you want him to follow. When your dog lies down, reward him with a treat or praise him. Soon, your dog will associate lying down with the command or the gesture and eventually will do so automatically.

Get Your Dog To Roll Over

Hold a treat in front of your dog and ask him to lie down. Rotate the treat so that your dog must turn his head until his entire body follows. Depending on their personalities, some dogs will be able to understand you quickly while others will take more time to learn.

If your dog does not roll over to follow the treat, gently push him over with your other hand. Repetition of the roll-over command is vital for your dog to remember the trick.

Repetition Is Key

Repetition is how dogs learn. Keep practicing the new command until your dog gets it. The dog needs a bit of patience to learn to roll over and you should spend a few minutes practicing a few basic commands every day.

Before teaching your dog any new tricks, go over the commands your pet already knows. Be sure that your dog fully knows the roll-over command before you start working on any new tricks.

Use Positive Reinforcement

By using positive reinforcement, any trick can be taught to your dog. Treats should be used to reward your pup when they follow your instructions. Dog treats, chicken, or cheese can be used to reward your dog.

If you don’t want to use treats to train your dog, you can praise or pet him every time you are pleased with him. A training session needs to end if you are becoming frustrated or your dog is not responding to your commands.

When a dog already knows the command ‘lie down,’ you are halfway to learning how to teach a dog to roll over. Keep practicing the roll over trick until your dog can do it without having to see a treat. Move on to the next trick you want your dog to learn as soon as your dog has mastered rolling over. By stopping your dog while they roll over, you can teach him to play dead.

By using the right techniques, it’s possible to teach your pup in no time at all. The key to training a dog is consistency and patience. If you are consistent with your commands and you are patient when teaching them, they will pick up on what you’re trying to do much faster.
